#BehindCloseDoors: How Big Alcohol Has Stalled Liquor Legislation at NEDLAC

13 May 2025

Join us for a virtual national dialogue to unpack findings from a joint study by the Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance—South Africa (SAAPA-SA), SAMRC/WITS, and the University of Stirling (UK).

The research exposes how alcohol industry lobbying has delayed the Draft Liquor Amendment Bill of 2016, raising serious concerns about corporate interference in public health policy.

Keynote Speakers:

  • Sasha Stevenson, Executive Director of SECTION27 and Human Rights Lawyer, will discuss the NEDLAC process and advocate for reform. Stevenson has over a decade of experience advancing health and food rights, with notable work on mental health, child nutrition, and migrant health.
  • Aadielah Maker Diedericks, Secretary General of SAAPA, will present key findings and insights from the study.
